Baird Give Back Week

October 7, 2021
This year our Baird Gives Back Week was delayed until October due to the pandemic. Me and a few of my colleagues volunteered at First Fruits Farm. This year we helped box green beans and bag potatoes that will be donated to those in need around the region. Our firm gives back to the community every year around the world during Baird Gives Back Week.

Baird and my practice support Empower4Life via a corporate sponsorship to support their programs

October 4, 2021

Who is Empower4Life
We are a community. The impact that Empower4Life has made over the years is the result of passionate community members who donate time and resources to make a difference in the lives of homeless children. We are a group of people who believe that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves love, hope, and opportunity.

Here at Empower4Life, we are dedicated to helping every child we meet grow strong. We know that in doing so, we make our communities, even our world, better places.

Their story
Empower4Life was founded in 2015 after our founder, Jennifer Barrett Cox, a teacher, began volunteering to work with homeless children at the Eastside Family Emergency Shelter in Rosedale, Maryland. Her time at this transitional shelter opened her eyes to the tremendous disadvantages faced by children coming from turbulent situations including homelessness.

Jen saw children with behavioral and emotional problems acting out, children not getting nourishing and healthy foods, children who were confined to cramped spaces for long hours, and children with hollow, empty eyes, full of fear and void of hope. Jen knew that for these kids to have a chance at a happy and healthy life, they needed nourishment for body, mind and spirit and in May 2015, Empower4Life was born.

2018 Baird Cares Week

Each year Baird employees go into the community and volunteer time to help our community grow and prosper during Baird Cares Week. This year, along with a few of my co-workers, I volunteered at Moveable Feast Baltimore. We prepared meals for delivery to our needy community.

The mission of Moveable Feast is to foster a community that cares for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by preparing and delivering nutritious meals and groceries and providing nutritional counseling and other services.

May 11, 2016: Baird Gives Back Week in Baltimore – Junior Achievement Biz Town

Each year Baird employees go into the community and volunteer time to help our community grow and prosper during Baird Cares Week. This year, along with a few of my co-workers, I volunteered at Junior Achievement of Central Maryland - Biz Town in Owings Mills, MD.

JA BizTown is a 10,000 square-foot, life-like city designed to reflect the importance of workplace performance and financial decisions in an authentic economy. After a few weeks of in-classroom coursework, fourth- through sixth-grade students are selected for a job and spend a day at the JA facility to experience what a typical day in the life of an adult may be like. The fun, immersive atmosphere inspires teamwork, critical thinking, and decision-making skills for each student.

JA BizTown enables parent and community volunteers to guide students through their day in the simulated economy. A volunteer team of 15-20 people assists with every part of JA BizTown’s real-life scenarios.

October 31, 2015: Walk To End Alzheimer's

Once again this year I served on the Walk To End Alzheimer's Walk Committee. On October 31, 2015 we completed our largest walk ever at Baltimore's Rash Field / Inner Harbor. Baird was a proud sponsor of this event. Here are a few pictures from the event:

May 19, 2015: IPAD Presentation / Client Events - Easton, MD and Baltimore, MD

We hosted two clients events to bring new technology understanding to our clients. Dennis Weishan, Baird's Director of Corporate Technology, was in town to conduct two presentations for our team. He is a technology guru and shared with us all there is to know about navigating Apple products such as the IPAD, IPhone, and the Apple Watch. Clients found his knowledge practical and left with a better understanding of how to be more productive users. Our clients who attended brought with them friends who were introduced to our firm and practice. A good time was had by all.

November 2013: NovemBeard at Baird

If you stop in for a meeting during the month of November, you might notice that I'm sporting a little more facial hair than usual. No, I didn't forget to shave last night (or the entire previous week). I'm actually working on growing a beard.

Don't be alarmed! I promise I'm not trying to spook or offend you. I've temporarily set aside my razor and shaving cream to participate in NovemBeard, a beard-growing and fundraising effort that aims to raise awareness and donations for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, a national organization dedicated to curing prostate cancer.

I was inspired to participate in this fun event by the people I know who have battled cancer as well as the millions of others that show incredible strength in the face of this disease.

Baird associates from across the country are also participating in this event. The ability to grow a beard isn't required to partake in NovemBeard. From sponsoring co-workers' newly grown beards to making donations and more, our associates – men and women alike – are banding together to support prostate cancer research.

October 19, 2013: Pop Warner Youth Football Sponsorship

This is my third year sponsoring the Lower Sussex Indians Pop Warner football team in Delaware.

October 12, 2013: Greater Baltimore Walk to End Alzheimer's

2013 marks my sixth year as a committee member and participant in the "Greater Baltimore Walk to End Alzheimers". It was a great event, raising over $165,000 for The Alzheimer's Association. This year was extra special as my wife and children also participated in the event. My daughter assisted with post-race activities for the kids that came to the event.

June 21, 2013: 2nd Annual Wounded Heroes Charity Golf Tournament

The Wounded Warrior Project™ (WWP) began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from the current conflicts, took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded service members has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover and transition back to civilian life.

My team participated in the event and also sponsored a hole on the course at Compass Pointe.

May 15, 2013: Baird Gives Back Week in Baltimore - The Loading Dock

A few of my colleagues and I donated our time to help the folks at The Loading Dock. It is Baird’s annual tradition to give back to our local communities.

The Loading Dock, Inc. (TLD) is the nation's first successful, self-sufficient, nonprofit building materials reuse center, packed with new and used items and architectural salvage. Motivated by the prevalence of poor housing conditions coupled with waste in the building industry, the founders of TLD established the nonprofit reuse clearinghouse in 1984. Donated materials, sorted and stored in TLD's 45,000-square-foot warehouse, are used in renovation and homeowner and rental property upkeep.

2011 & 2012 Greater Baltimore Walk to End Alzheimer's™

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's™ is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Azheimer care, support and research. As members of the 2012 Walk Committee, we helped raise awareness and donations for the Alzheimer's Association. We had a great turnout on a pretty day.

Baltimore County Animal Shelter

My colleagues and I spent a few hours at the Towson WalMart on May 27, 2012 helping the Baltimore County Animal Shelter find homes for abandoned pets. This event was part of our Baird Give Back Week which provides opportunities for associates throughout the company to give back to their communities.
